travelbits
Posted russian visa app, with dodgy passport photo that makes me look like a junkie and nice support letter from waytorussia.net that has my name transliterated into cyrillic. The Russian consulate bureaucracy is notoriously pedantic... I wonder what fault they will find with it.
Later today, must go to my doctors surgery to fill out a form all about where I am visiting so that I can be injected with all that is appropriate.
Also, I've finally sent delivery payment for my shipping from LA so hopefully my boxes'o'crap will turn up shortly (should probably stow most of them straight in the garage rather than carrying them up into the house)

russian visa
Applied for visa support for a business visa (which seemed more flexible)... was told that couldn't be applied for until 45 days until my entry into Russia, which is a little close to my departure to Norway. Switched to tourist visa, which should be processed and faxed to me today, so hopefully can send everything off to the embassy at the weekend.

7 day travelcard
Purchased 7-day zone 12 travelcard last week, and used it for this:
Thursday
Worked in Holborn at a solicitor's office. Flirted on IM with girlie. After work went for quick pint, which turned into whole evening of drinking and then walk across London Bridge. Went back to Guildford.
Friday
Mother at home in the morning so hung out with her a bit, then off to the big city to work some more.
In the evening went back to Guildford with the intention of having a quiet night with family. Series of 'interesting' SMSes and then phone calls from increasingly less sober girlie.
Saturday
Wake to apology arriving by SMS.
Went walkies around London to take some touristy pictures - up the tower at Westminster Cathedral, east on the bus to St. Pauls, up the dome there (godless heathens must pay 8 pounds to get in), then across the millenium bridge (fine example of British engineering - delivered late and didn't work - seems fixed now, though) and around the Tate Modern.
In the evening, ditched father and went to meet old college buddies - same crowd as last week, with the addition of ginger mancunian Danny. Went to Brick Lane, in the east end, for a couple of beers and a curry. Turned into a lot of beers and then curry as 2300. Was going to stay at James' but turned out more convenient to go back to Guildford. Woke brother up to collect from station at 0200.
Sunday
In Guildford. Didn't get out of bed 'till 1500.
Monday
Up bright and early to continue my Visual Basic / MS-Office adventue. In the evening was dinner with egyptian friend Golestan (who I met in Scotland, and last saw in Hamburg in March a year ago). Then stay with James.
Tuesday
More work... project almost completed... just needed a few more minutes work, but I did not want to be late for all-you-can-eat sushi in Soho, with Cherie and old university friend's little sister. After sushi, walked down Charing Cross road, across the new hungerford bridge (maybe called something else now), along the south bank of the Thames, back north across the millenium bridge, to Monument station where we were to meet James... turns out James has more important beer to drink than beer with us, so instead walk back south again over London Bridge... deposit accompaniment into the national rail system... Jubilee line to Canada Water, which used to be my regular tube stop, then east london line and district line back to James'. Cup of tea and bed.
Wednesday
10 minutes of work, then mess round with home PC from afar as antidote to all this Windows. Lunch at All Bar One near the Tower with grrl. Waterloo and City line back to Waterloo, then to Guildford; once in Guildford: shower, sit round, drink tea, in bed with laptop, etc.

WinWhore
I have been programming Visual BASIC for 4 days. Other buzzwords include Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Outlook. mmmmmm. It'll pay for a few pints, at least.

neun hundert neun und neunzig luftballons
the guildford police respond to 999 much faster than they used to (subsecond latency). better than a few years ago by a minute or so and better than the California Highway Patrol by several minutes. such a lovely place to live, guildford.

london weekend
On Thursday up to London to visit an old employer (skipped fare as, just like the old days, no ticket inspectors walking round to check/sell me a ticket) - sat in the 'Penderel's Oak' on High Holburn for a couple of hours with the IT administrator drinking and eating, as has become a tradition with her and I for my brief visits back to UK. Then back to their office to see who else I remembered (not many - at least one room full of secretaries was subject to unknown slightly drunken man bursting in trying to find people he knew and failing)... got the bus east through the city to and across London Bridge to 'The Barrow Boy and Banker' at the south end of the bridge and waited for James... a pint there and then moved to some other pub next door... headed from there back west for pizza in Soho then went on a margerita finding mission, via a CAMRA pub 'The Porterhouse' which I had been to a long time ago and never been able to find (mostly through lack of trying) again - found margeritas in 'Navajo Joe's' (or really the bar below it, 'Joe's Bar'). James had to get up early to be sysadmin the next morning, so after that headed back to Stepney.
Friday pottered around in James' flat a bit in the morning, acquired oyster card, then went on touristy walk around central London, from Embankment along the riverbank to Parliament Square, back along Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, then along the Mall to Buckingham Palace, around Hyde Park past Marble Arch to Paddington Station. An amerikaner friend/former colleage was passing through - met here there, went to the 'Queen's Head' near Sloane Square, then to her father's flat, across London to drink at the 'Liberty Bounds' by the Tower. Dinner at 'Toto' back near Sloane Square, and then up to Old Street to '333' with James and Dom where we danced until the wee hours.
Saturday, morning sleep. Greasy bacon+egg breakfast at about 1400; by the time that eaten, tea drunk, photos played with, it was time to head to the 'Nag's Head' in Covent Garden (where I spent a whole day accidentally drinking in 1997) to meet an old friend from university and her lovely sister. A few beers there (James back on his old habit of making mixed Smirnoff Ice / Guinness drink at the pub table - yum), Chinatown for food (duck and other chinesey things - not pub so do not remember name), Joe's Bar for too many margeritas, thrown out at 2320 so went to the 'Long Island Ice Tea Bar'... definitely far too much to drink there - people kept either putting drinks in my hand or demanding that I buy rounds. oh dear. back at friend's house at 0430 to discover no electricity. drunken fumbling with fuses with no success (but fortunately also no drunken electrocution). Woke up on friend's couch next morning, lay there for hours slightly uncomfortable but not too bad - eventually stood up to go to railway station, got as far as front door and had to throw up in lavatory. oh dear. Rested another half hour, then tried again. Made it 30m outside the door this time before having to lean over in the gutter; another 200m and again. By this time there was nothing left to come out, but I still had to stop a couple more times. All the way, my poor friend's sister had to keep stopping and waiting and trying not to look. oh dear.
Slept on the train on the way home... almost missed stop... back for big sunday dinner (pork) with family and then sound asleep until Monday morning - as I've said to people before, best way to cure jetlag is to get massive hangover(s).
